Consists of a low-lying basin, bounded on the northeast by Mendip Hills and on the west by Quantock Hills; occupied by prehistoric peoples; Romans mined lead in area; formed part of Kingdom of Wessex in 7th century; distinctive "Zummerzetaheer" dialect is spoken in some areas.
