Scheduled Monument Description

This monument is a section of the Antonine Wall which runs through Seabegs Wood, on the south side of the B816 on the western outskirts of Bonnybridge.

This proposal forms part of a programme which is intended to update the scheduling of the Antonine Wall, and extends the scheduling to cover the whole of the area in the care of the Secretary of State for Scotland.

The Antonine Wall at this location is exceptionally well-preserved for a length of 350m, although the ditch has been cut by the road at the eastern end of the area. The ditch is over 12m wide and 2m deep, and the rampart is also upstanding to a height of over 1m in places. Seabegs Wood also has the best-preserved visible stretch of the Military Way, running parallel to the Wall, about 30m to the south and with a noticeable camber.

The area to be scheduled includes the whole of the area in the Guardianship of the Secretary of State for Scotland, taking in the Antonine Wall rampart, berm, ditch and upcast mound, the Military Way, and an area to the S where traces of activities associated with the construction and use of the monument may survive, as shown in red on the accompanying map extract.
