The monument is of national importance as a major Roman frontier system, which has the potential to increase considerably our understanding of Roman frontier policy and military organisation. The Antonine Wall is also the most substantial and important Roman monument in Scotland.

This monument is a section of the Antonine Wall which runs from a field boundary 270m SW of Wester Dullatur to 100m SW of East Dullatur.

This proposal forms part of a programme which is intended to update the scheduling of the Antonine Wall. This scheduling extends the protected area in some parts but reduces the protected area slightly in others.

The Antonine Wall at this location consists of the rampart, the ditch, the berm (area between rampart and ditch) and the upcast mound. The Antonine Wall has been flattened, although faint traces of its ditch and outer mound survive at various points and it is likely that substantial traces will survive under the topsoil. The scheduling falls into three sections.

The first section runs from 300m SW of Wester Dullatur to the Dullatur-Kilsyth road, and is crossed by a track about half-way along. To the W of the track the ditch is clearly visible as a wide depression and the upcast mound on the north side of the ditch is spread out by ploughing but still visible. To the E of the track the line of the ditch is marked by a drain running along a linear hollow.

The second section runs from the E side of the Dullatur-Kilsyth road to a track running N-S. Here the line of the ditch is also marked by a drain running through an arable field. In the SE corner of the scheduled area is the site of some houses, now demolished. There is every indication that deep excavation was not involved in their construction and that therefore the potential remains for archaeological deposits to remain below the site.

The third section runs from the other side of the N-S track through part of the grounds of East Dullatur House as far as the drive. Here the ditch is visible as a burn gully.

The W edge of the scheduled area is defined by a field boundary 300m SW of Wester Dullatur. The E boundary is defined by the W edge of the drive leading to East Dullatur.

The area to be scheduled includes the Antonine Wall rampart, berm, ditch and upcast mound, and an area to the N and S where traces of activities associated with the construction and use of the monument may survive, as shown in red on the accompanying map extract. The top 50cm of the farm track which runs through the first section of scheduled area is excluded from the scheduling to enable the top surface to be altered without written consent.
