Scheduled Monument Statement of Significance

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to our understanding of prehistoric defensive settlement and economy. The site may be expected to contain material relating to rampart construction and the ditches may contain material relating to the contemporary environment of the monument.

The monument comprises the remains of a fort of later prehistoric date represented by cropmarks visible on oblique aerial photographs.

The monument lies on a prominent ridge at around 200m OD. It is partially in arable farmland and partially wooded. The fort is bisected by a track and contains a quarry and farm buildings within its circuit. It is approximately 160m in diameter, with inner and outer ditches up to 6m wide separated by some 15m. The ditches are between 2-8m wide. Dark patches in the SE interior may indicate internal buildings or areas of activity.

The area to be scheduled encompasses the visible features and an area around them in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is circular with a maximum diameter of 200m, excluding the track, farm buildings and quarry, as shown in red on the accompanying map.
