The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to our understanding of prehistoric settlement and economy. The proximity of enclosed and unenclosed settlement is rare in southern Scotland and the site may hold information on the chronological and functional relationships between the various settlement forms represented.

The monument comprises the remains of an enclosed settlement and unenclosed structures of prehistoric date represented by cropmarks visible on oblique aerial photographs.

The monument lies in arable farmland at around 185m OD. It comprises a sub-circular enclosure of approximately 70m diameter, defined by a ditch some 3-4m wide, and a second enclosure of possibly similar dimensions partially under trees to the E and bisected by the modern road. Dark patches inside the first enclosure may represent the remains of internal structures or areas of activity. Outside the first enclosure to its SE and SW are a series of sub-circular cropmarks probably representing the remains of prehistoric roundhouses of timber construction.

The area to be scheduled encompasses the visible features and an area around them in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is irregular in shape with maximum dimensions of 280m NE-SW by 190m as marked in red on the accompanying map. It excludes the modern road.
