The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to our understanding of prehistoric settlement and economy. The ditches and the area in and around the enclosure may be expected to contain material relating to the economy and environment of the site.

The monument comprises the remains of an enclosed settlement of prehistoric date represented by cropmarks visible on oblique aerial photographs.

The monument lies in arable farmland at around 145m OD. It comprises a sub-square enclosure with sides approximately 60m long formed by a ditch some 3m wide. Three of its rounded corners are well-defined, while that to the NW is less well-defined. A sinuous, curving cropmark some 70m long runs into the W end of the enclosure and partially bisects it.

Sub-rectangular enclosures in this area are conventionally identified with the period of the Roman incursions into southern Scotland. It is to this group of sites that this monument seems most likely to belong

The area to be scheduled encompasses the visible features and an area around them in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is a rectangle missing the SE corner, and has maximum dimensions of 125m E-W and 100m N-S as marked in red on the accompanying map.
