The monument is of national importance because of its potential to add to our understanding of prehistoric settlement and economy. Its importance is greatly enhanced by its association with the wider landscape of prehistoric and Roman remains in the valley of the South Esk.

The monument comprises a rectilinear enclosure of Iron Age date (800BC – AD400). It is likely the remains of a settlement and appears as cropmarks on oblique on oblique aerial photographs. The monument is located on a terrace in an arable field at around 50m above sea level.
The enclosure is sub-rectangular with a 3m wide entrance in the centre of its northwest-facing side. The entrance is flanked by expanded ditch terminals. It measures 24m northwest-southeast by 18m northeast-southwest and is surrounded by a ditch a maximum of 3m wide. There is an entrance to the northwest 3m wide.
The scheduled area is circular, measuring 65m in diameter. It includes the remains described above and an area around within which evidence relating to the monument's construction, use and abandonment is expected to survive, as shown in red on the accompanying map.
