Scheduled Monument Description

The monument comprises the remains of a hillfort of prehistoric date represented by a series of earthworks.

The fort occupies the summit of Camp Wood Hill, commanding extensive views across the surrounding area. It has approximate overall dimensions of 140m NE-SW by 110m and is defined by an earthen bank some 6m wide and up to 1m high. Within the fort are the remains of a series of smaller enclosures and possible stances for timber roundhouses.

The area to be scheduled encompasses the visible features and an area around them in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is sub-circular with maximum dimensions of 180m NNE-SSW

by 120m as marked in red on the accompanying map.

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to add to our understanding of prehistoric settlement and domestic organisation. The surviving remains of domestic buildings and enclosures within the fort are particularly important in terms of their potential to reveal the organisation of domestic and economic activities contemporary with its occupation.
