Caption
Only a fragment now remains of Fotheringhay Castle, once the home of the Dukes of York. Richard III was born here in 1452, and in 1587 the castle saw the execution of Mary Queen of Scots. From the top of the overgrown mound, on which the castle once stood, there is a splendid view of the River Nene as it meanders its way to the Wash. The lovely 14th century church dominates the surrounding countyside. Its tall octagonal lantern tower is surmounted with the badge of the House of York and many members of the illustrious York family are buried within its precents. The beautiful 15th century painted pulpit was a gift from Edward IV. Today the church contains interesting historical displays relating to the village.
