Famed for its Alpine landscapes and culture, Austria has a rich history. It was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1867-1918), Habsburg Dynasty (1282–1918), and Roman Empire (c. 5 BCE-480 CE) and became independent in 1919. In prehistory, the area was home to the Halstatt Culture (12th to 6th cent. BCE) and settled by Paleolithic peoples who created the Venus of Wilendorf (c. 27,000 BCE). In recent history, Austria was home to Mozart, Freud, and Klimt.
