Raising of Lazarus

The Raising of Lazarus. Panel 10 of the Mary Magdalene Window, c. 1205-15, located at the west end of the south aisle. Chartres Cathedral, France. Depicting a scene from John 11:1-43, Lazarus is shown sitting up in his burial shroud with face uncovered. The man removing the grave slab seems not to be Jesus, since Jesus is shown performing the miracle in the pane to the left (with a different halo and color of clothing) and in the biblical account he commands, "Take away the stone." On the right, an onlooker in blue covers his nose against the stench. Image credit: Holly Hayes
