WEST HAUXWELL SE 19 SE 8/42 Saxon cross shaft approximately 10 metres to south of Church of 13.2.67 Saint Oswald's II GV
Cross shaft. C8-C9. Shaft approximately 2 metres high, set on a plain base. Anglo-Danish. On the east side, a knot pattern and a panel for inscription, recorded as "Crux Sci Gacobi" (Pevsner, Buildings of England, North Riding (1966), p.183). This is traditionally thought to have commemorated Saint James the Deacon, d.690, who is said to have founded the church (notes on display in the church porch). Scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
