NZ 2464 SE and NZ 2463 NE NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE WESTGATE ROAD (north side) 20/566 and 23/566 Church of St. John the 14.6.54 Baptist GV I Parish church. Mostly C14 and C15; chancel largely rebuilt 1848. Sandstone with ashlar dressings; Welsh slate roof. Cruciform with aisles clasping west tower; south porch; north transept with west aisle. 3-stage tower has 3-light window, small window above, and bar tracery to 2-light belfry openings under battlemented parapet with corner pinnacles; octagonal clasping buttresses. Gabled porch has moulded 2- centred arch. Segmental-headed 3-light aisle windows have perpendicular tracery; elliptical-headed 4-light windows in transepts, clerestory and chancel. Nave parapet. Interior: plaster with ashlar dressings; low-pitched roof. 4-bay arcades have double-chamfered arches dying without capitals into octagonal piers. Continuous hood-mould, with heraldic shields on north. North transept 2-bay arcade has octagonal pier with moulded capital. High single-chamfered tower arch; side arches 4-centred; ribbed vault to baptistry. Chancel arch restored. North chancel wall has upper part of small round-headed window. C17 octagonal stone font with shields on sides; wood cover in C15 style.
