Just behind Lausanne Cathedral is the former bishop's palace (Ancien-Evêché), which has been converted into the Musée Historique de Lausanne. The bishop's palace features a 13th-century fortified tower and the museum consists of historical studies of Old Lausanne.
The highlight of the collections is in the basement, where a 23 sq. m (250-sq.-ft.) scale model depicting the old city as it was in the 17th century with excellent commentary. It details the history of the various neighborhoods and provides an overview of the city's many hills and valleys.
