Chauvigny Church Chauvigny, France

A collegiate church with fascinating Romanesque sculptures and a spectacular location in a medieval town overlooking a river.

Sphinxes or manticores. Inspired by art from the Near East, these mythical creatures with a lion's body, long bird-like neck and woman's face are depicted symmetrically on all four sides of the capital. Detail of Romanesque capital in the choir, mid-12th century. St-Pierre, Chauvigny, Poitou-Charentes, France. Image credit: Holly Hayes
