Ripoll Monastery is a Romanesque Benedictine monastery founded in 888 by Comte Guifré el Pilós (Count Wilfred the Hairy). He saw the monastery as a means of repopulating the region of Ausona after many years of battle left the region mostly abandoned, Frankish Christians re-took the area from the Arabs in 879. It became the main religious center of Catalonia for 500 years, known for its monastic school and scriptorium.
