Winged Victory of Samothrace
The famous Winged Victory of Samothrace (c.200 BC), a statue found in a sanctuary on the Greek island of Samothrace in 1863. Created to celebrate a great naval victory, the monument would have originally stood next to a reflecting pool that may have been illuminated with flickering lamps by night. It now occupies a prominent location overlooking the Escalier Daru in the Louvre Museum, Paris. Louvre Museum, Paris, France.
