Image: Last Judgment Portal, c.1230: Tympanum

Central portal of the west front, depicting the Last Judgment (c.1230). From bottom to top, the tympanum depicts: the Resurrection of the Dead; the Weighing of Souls by the Archangel Michael with interference by the Devil, the damned (right) and the redeemed (left); and Christ in Majesty displaying his wounds, flanked by angels holding instruments of the Passion (spear and cross) and Mary and John, who were present at the crucifixion. The archivolts show the Heavenly Court (angels, saints, etc.) and some scenes representing heaven (bottom left) and hell (bottom right). Notre-Dame Cathedral, Paris, France.
