Reliquary of Charlemagne

Reliquary of Charlemagne, probably commissioned by Charles IV, c.1370-90. Like the Three Towers Reliquary from the same period, it is inspired by Gothic architecture and has many similarities with 14th-century Gothic tombs. A Latin inscription on the base describes the relics and their importance. The lower part of the reliquary, supported by eight columns, displays a thigh bone of Charlemagne. Above this are statues of Charlemagne holding a model of Aachen Cathedral, the Virgin and Child, and St. Catherine holding a sword and wheel. The roof tabernacles contain statues of Christ and two angels, who hold pieces of the Holy Nail, the True Cross, and the Crown of Thorns. Aachen Cathedral Treasury, Aachen, Germany.
