Trinity Chapel Roundels

Image: Trinity Chapel Roundels

Inlaid marble roundels with the signs of the zodiac, months of the year and the virtues and vices, on the floor on the south side of the Trinity Chapel. These date from around 1220 and were part of the embellishment of St. Thomas' shrine. The roundels seen here, from left to right along the top row, are: June (mowing); September (hunting), Humility and Pride; Scorpio (looking more like a bear with a long tail); and October (treading grapes). The middle row has a rabbit playing a harp; a mythical beast (both heraldic symbols); and Sagittarius. Canterbury Cathedral, Canterbury, England, UK.
