Marker: "Megalithic House: A Family Home"

Historical marker at Megalithic House, Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado. "Megalithic House: A Family Home. This small collection of rooms was probably home to one extended family. Its layout--several living and storage rooms surrounding a kiva and courtyard--is known as a "unit pueblo" and represents a typical family home of the late AD 1100s. Many families lived in similar small pueblos nearby and throughout the region. Imagine cultivated garden plots of corn, beans, and squash surrounding Megalithic House and the nearby sites. The ancient farmers also raised turkeys for their feathers, bones and meat, and kept small domesticated dogs. Only about half of Megalithic House is visible to you today. Leaving a structure unexcavated or backfilling it after study protects the site from exposure and deterioration." Megalithic House, Montezuma County, Colorado, USA.
