Historical Marker, Cuween Hill Cairn - Orkney, Scotland

Historical marker for Cuween Hill chambered cairn, near Grimbister and the Bay of Firth. Mainland, Orkney Islands, Scotland, UK. "This is a communal tomb of about 3000 BC. In its arrangement of passage, main chamber, and side-cells it is related to the great tomb of Maes Howe. Remains of 8 people were found inside with bones of ox, birds and the skulls of 24 dogs, which suggests some rite connected with hunting. Tombs such as these were used for many generations. / Cared for by Historic Scotland on behalf of the Secretary of State for Scotland" Cuween Hill Chambered Cairn, Scotland, UK.
