Roland at Roncesvalles, Charlemagne Window, Chartres, France
Two events involving Roland after the battle of Roncevaux/Roncesvalles: he tries and fails to break his sword Durendal on a rock and he sounds the oliphant horn to Charlemagne. The Hand of God between the scenes may represent the angel who carried the sound to Charlemagne. Dead soldiers lie in a heap below. Stained glass panels of the Charlemagne Window, Chartres Cathedral.
