All Souls College, Codrington Library England, UK

The North range of North Quadrangle. Begun 1716; Dr Clarke and Sir Nathaniel Lloyd as "inspectors", Hawksmoor supervised and Townesend and Peisley were the masons. Alterations and additions made 1838 and1866.

The sundial was designed by Christopher Wren (a busy man in Oxford). In 2006, All Souls was bequeathed an unspecified amount by a former fellow of the college, on condition that the dial was moved back to its original position on the south wall of the chapel. (It is now in the northern quadrangle.) The college, known as wealthy even by Oxford standards (and also for being a "college without any students") declined, saying the conditions were too onerous. Whatever the rights and wrongs, it looks good where it is. The motto beneath the dial reads: "PEREUNT ET IMPUTANTUR - They pass by and are reckoned." Image credit: Hugh Chevallier
