Image: Great east window (c.1350)

The central focus of the Great East Window: the Virgin Mary and Christ, both crowned. They were both originally enthroned; the lower halves of the panels are later replacements.

With an area the size of a tennis court, Gloucester Cathedral's Great East Window vies with that at York Minster for the title of largest stained glass window in England. It was installed in about 1350 and still has most of its medieval glass. The canopies over the saints exactly match the canopies carved of wood for the choir stalls of the same date.
