Image: Capital: Virtues and Vices: Greed

Cathédrale St-Lazare Autun, Saône-et-Loire (71), Bourgogne (Burgundy), France

Romanesque capital depicting the victory of virtues over vices, on display in the chapter house. On the left, the personified virtue of Charity holds out a chalice while standing on the head of Greed (shown here), a figure who grips money bags with both hands. The pair on the right is less certainly identifiable, but one interpretation is the vritue of Patience standing on the vice of Wrath.
