Image: Sarcophagus of the Spouses 2: Sacrifice of Abraham

The Sacrifice of Abraham (Genesis 22:1-19). The hand of God is shown stopping Abraham's just as he is about to sacrifice his son Isaac, who may be shown kneeling on the right. The ram that took Isaac's place, seen as a foreshadowing of Christ, is included in the scene. Eve can be seen in the far right of the photo, seemingly looking back at Isaac. Second scene on the Sarcophagus of the Spouses (Sarcophage des Epoux) or Trinity Sarcophagus, dating from the second quarter of the 4th century. The tomb was found in 1974 at Trinquetaille, still sealed and containing the remains of a woman around age 50 and a man, with war wounds, around age 60. Inv. PAP.74.00.1/5.
