Monterey and AlcatrazMonterey and Alcatraz
posted December 10, 2011 by Holly Hayes

Whew, it has been a busy couple of days and the next few look to be the same way. But we are having lots of fun in the California sunshine. Yesterday we left San Francisco and drove down Highway 101 (and various other winding roads) to Monterey...

Sausalito, San Francisco and Alcatraz
posted December 9, 2011 by Holly Hayes

Today we spent a lot of time on boats: ferry to SF; ferry to Alcatraz; ferry back to SF; ferry back to Sausalito. It was very fun, but when we got home tonight I still felt like the ground was swaying! I'm happy to report Alcatraz lived up to the hype - it was very interesting and fun to explore...

Our first stop today was Golden, an 1800s gold mining town just a few miles away. All that's left of the town today are the little church, general store, and a couple of unidentified tilting buildings, but they are very cute...

Amsterdam to Portland
posted December 6, 2010 by Holly Hayes

We spent our last two nights in Europe by the airport in Amsterdam in the unique citizenM hotel, which I've stayed in before and like quite a lot. I asked for rooms on an upper floor with views of the planes and Sarah and I both really enjoyed it...

Trier to Utrecht

It's always sad to leave Germany but it has also been nice being back in the Netherlands, where I no longer have to hurt my brain trying to speak German! Everyone here speaks excellent English, so it's a little like being back home already...

Christmas Market and Snowy Sightseeing in Trier
posted December 1, 2010 by Holly Hayes

We had a nice time in Trier. It has lots of ancient Roman stuff, an old cathedral, great museums, a good Christmas market, and it snowed throughout the day. Unfortunately, the snow did not fall in big, slow flakes, but tiny icy flakes that seemed to drive straight into our faces no matter which direction we were walking...
