Monastic gate, now used as a belfry for the Cathedral Church of St James (qv). Built under Abbot Anselm between 1120 and 1148; Romanesque. Restored by LN Cottingham in 1846/7. Barnack stone.

The impressive "Black Gate" in Trier is a 2nd-century Roman city gate. It owes its survival to early use by a revered hermit monk and subsequent transformation into a two-story church.

Nevile's Gate
Cambridge, England
c. 1610
Circa 1610. Ashlar semi-circular arch with much carved decoration. The piers have Roman Doric half-columns on tall pedestals which support an entablature. The arch carries the Stuart Royal, arms and the Nevile arms.
