TQ 3079 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER GAYFERE STREET, SW1 101/66 14.1.70 No. 12 (Gayfere Lodge) (Including No. 40 Smith snuare) G.V. II Terraced town house. c.1930 by Oliver Hill. Red brick with Portland stone dressings, tiled roof. A combined composition in Hill's sophisticated "beau-monde" neo-Georgian. 3 storeys and 2 tiers of attic dormers in steep roof. 5-window symmetrical "centre" with recessed entrance bay to left for No. 40 and a 3 window wing to right for No. 12. The entrance to No. 12 central to 5-window portion, architraved with cornice on consoles. The entrance to No. 40 Smith Square with similar doorway; both have pedimented windows above doorway, that over No. 40 with "pergola" balcony. Recessed glazing bar sash windows under flat gauged rubbed brick arches with keystones. The north wing with narrow, segmental arched close set windows. Stone plinth, 1st floor sill band, stone cornice and brick parapet under eaves with central pediment.
