3/99 Merlins Mill

II

Former mill, now detached house. Late C17, enlarged or rebuilt early Cl9. Coursed rubble and square, dressed limestone; ashlar chimneys; Welsh slate roof. Four-storey; 3-storey part at east end. South side: earliest part to right has single-window fenestration, keyed segmental arched casement to ground floor, 3- light with hoodmould to middle and upper floors. Higher main part of mill to left has scattered fenestration, mainly 2-light chamfered mullioned casements. Low rather small gable end chimneys with plain caps. North side: mostly C20 casements in original mill window openings, some segmental arched. Attached wing to north side of earlier part runs alongside road. Interior not inspected. Recorded as corn mill from 1820 when known as Toadsmoor Lower Mill. (N.M. Herbert, 'Bisley' in V.C.H. Glos. xi, 1976, pp 4-40)
