SK 08 SW PARISH OF CHINLEY, BUXWORTH AND BROWNSIDE NEW ROAD 3/88 (North Side) CHURCH OF ST JAMES GV II

Church. cI874. Architect - J Lowe. Gritstone rubble with quoins. Ashlar gritstone dressings. Slate roof with fish-scale banding and terracota ridge. Stone coped gables with kneelers. Coped bellcote to west. Single cell building with polygonal apse to east. North and south vestries, acting as transepts externally. South elevation - three pairs of twin lancet windows with leaded lights. Three butresses, one to west side of each window. To west glazed wooden, gabled porch with cusped decoration and cusped windows to sides. To east vestry has two-light flush mullion windows with arched lights. Polygonal apse has lancet windows to sides. East window has geometric tracery. North elevation, very similar to south, except for porch. Interior - contemporary pews, font and other fittings. Scissor truss roof. Central south window has abstract stained glass designed I962 by T Cocke.
