SK05SW IPSTONES
1798-0/6/10018 Former stables about 40m north of Whitehough
GV II Stables. Dated 1724. Dressed and coursed stone with large dressed stone quoins and coping to the gable ends; now roofless and west gable partly collapsed. PLAN: Rectangular 2-cell plan, with larger right-hand cell with doorway at the front; the front doorway to the left cell has been blocked. EXTERIOR: 1 storey and loft. 4-bay south front with 3-1ight stone mullion window on right, small single-light window on left and two doorways at centre; the larger right-hand doorway has big stone lintel with recessed panel carved RM 1724; the smaller left doorway is now a window. 3-1ight stone mullion window in RH (E) gable blocked by adjoining outbuilding. At rear, very small blocked opening with stone frames and loft doorway to right of centre. INTERIOR: First floor beams mostly collapsed. Stone partition wall between the two rooms. NOTE: Robert Mellor (initials RM carved on lintel) was a Quaker and it is reputed that this building was once a chapel (Rev F Brighton, The Tales of lpstones, 1937).
