ENSTONE LOWER CLEVELEY SP32SE 8/58 The Mill House and The Mill

Mill house and attached water mill, now house. Probably late C17/early C18 with later alterations. Coursed limestone rubble with wooden lintels: Welsh-slate and concrete plain-tile roofs with brick stacks. 3-unit cross-passage plan plus Z-shaped mill range. 2 storeys plus attic. 4-window front of house has a slightly later bay to left, with a 3-light casement at each floor and the entrance, (with flat canopy on scroll brackets), adjoining the straight joint; remainder of front has three tall 2-light casements at first floor plus two 3-light casements below. Steep-pitched roof has 3 stacks and continues over the former mill to right, which has 2 small windows at each floor with C20 casements, and has a central datestone inscribed "MT/1789"; a lower L-shaped rear wing returns from the right. Interior: house has stop-chamfered spine beams. Mill retains some shafting plus the waterwheel, now hidden beneath the floor. (W. Foreman: Oxfordshire Mills: 1983, pl04)
