Public house. c1890, with late C20 alterations. Brick with faience tile ground floor, terracotta and ashlar dressings and hipped plain tile mansard roof with 2 gable, single ridge and single rear wall stacks. Plinth, ground floor and first floor cornices, panelled ornamented parapet. 2 storeys plus attics; 6x5 windows. Corner site with angled corner. Corner entrance bay has a canted stone bay window with 3 plain sashes. Above it, an ornate parapet fronted by a shaped gable with pediment and flanked by octagonal columns with shaped tops. Below, a C20 doorway flanked by pilasters, with an oval fanlight glazed as a 6-pointed star. Over the door, a swan-neck pediment framing a pedimented relief panel. Main front, to Hessle Road, has 6 plain sashes and above, 2 large through-eaves dormers with close-studded gables, each with a 2-light mullioned window. Below, faience tiled shop front divided by pilasters, the frieze inscribed "Alexandra Hotel". Central half-glazed door with circular overlight and swan-neck pediment, flanked by large elliptical-arched 3-light windows with round-headed lights and transoms. To left, a similar doorway with a star-glazed overlight. Blank left return has a terracotta relief panel with the name of the hotel. Right return, to Ropery Street, has the same shop front with two 2-light round-arched windows, then a tile panel with a small window above it. To right again, a half-glazed door with round overlight and swan-neck pediment. INTERIOR has the original cornice and strapwork ceiling, etched glass windows, moulded doorcases and original doors. Original mahogany back-bar fitting with clock.
