SX874510 CHURCH CLOSE 673-1/8/69 (South side) Water conduit adjoining rear wall of No.16 Smith Street
GV II
Water conduit. Probably C16 origins, rebuilt 1852 according to plaque. Local stone rubble with painted ashlar (or replacement concrete) coping. Oblong in plan and built against the back wall of No.16 Smith Street (qv), with ridged coping. Long north face contains a boarded hatch, presumably giving access to the plumbing. The narrow east side contains a plaque inscribed "Rebuilt 1825, H.M. Baker, mayor", above the iron fittings for the tap. This is one of a number of water conduits around Dartmouth.
