TM 23 NW ERWARTON THE STREET
3/13 Gatehouse at north approach drive to Erwarton Hall
- II*
Gatehouse, dated by Pevsner for heraldic reasons, circa 1549. Red brick. Vaulted roof with weathervane. Square plan, tunnel vaulted, symmetrical sides with semi- circular pediments between the round, raised angle buttresses with pinnacles, east and west faces with central full height buttresses and pinnacle above the north and south round-headed archways. Broad modillion bands continue above the archways and returns. Plinth. Circular openings flank each side of each angle buttress. Pedestrian archways to south of east and west faces. Similar to the gatehouse at Beckingham Hall, Tolleshunt Major, Essex, dated circa 1545. N Pevsner, Suffolk, 1961.
