SX 39 SE ST GILES ON THE HEATH GRIDLEY CORNER

5/43 Linda Cottage -

II

Cottage. Probably late C17 with a remodelling of the C19 and C20 renovations. Whitewashed plastered cob on stone rubble footings, roof slated at the left, thatched to the right with gabled ends, axial stack rebuilt in stone and brick. The original plan may have been a 2 room and through passage house with the hall/kitchen to the left heated from a gable end stack (now the axial stack). The right-hand room has been dismantled, possibly in the C19 when an unheated room, smaller than the hall/kitchen was added at the left and the ceilings may have been replaced. 2 service rooms under a lean-to roof may have been added to the rear at the same time giving the present plan, 2-rooms wide and 1 1/2-rooms deep with the former through passage at the right end of the range. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2-window front, the thatched roof to the right with eaves eyebrowed over a first floor window and brought down as a sloping roof carried on stone cheeks forming an open-fronted porch to the right. Wide 3-plank front door with a pegged doorframe (the rear door of the passage has been blocked but was discovered during renovations). First floor window right is a 2-light casement, probably of the C18, with some old glass. Fenestration elsewhere is C19 2- and 3-light casements with glazing bars. 2 shallow buttresses to the front. Interior Internal features mostly C20 and C19. Exposed joists of slender scantling, C19 stair running to the rear of the axial stack, C20 grate said to conceal earlier features. No access to apex of roof at time of survey (1985) but roof trusses said to be pegged.
