Forge Cottage Plaxtol, England

When I was 25, I lived and worked at the Forge Restaurant in Plaxtol. Now, at 86, residing in Canada, I look back to those years as the happiest days of my youth. I was one of seven young men who lived together in complete harmony. Residing in a 400-year-old converted blacksmith shop in one of England's most beautiful villages was a privilege. Every Friday night, a local blacksmith fired up the Forge and hammered miniature horseshoes for our diners. Sadly, I have no photographs of that time as digital cameras had not yet been invented. However, I have a demitasse coffee cup and a miniature horseshoe that serve as mementoes of my stay. Now and then, I search the internet for images of the Forge as it was then, and it brings back happy memories. In 1964, I eventually left the Forge with a companion from the restaurant to immigrate to the USA.

It was in the Forge, in 1963, that I sadly informed some visiting American guests about the assassination of their President, JFK. Best Wishes, Alastair Barnett
