SK 85 NW LANGFORD FOSSE WAY (west side)

1/32 Langford Hall 16-1-67 G.V. II*

Country house, c.1780/90 by John Carr of York for the Duncombes. Red brick under a hipped slate roof with ashlar dressings and standing on an ashlar plinth. 2½ storeys. Symmetrical facade of 5 bays, the central 3 bays slightly project and are surmounted by a pediment with ashlar cornice and swag. The central doorway is on a platform of 5 steps up. The porch has Doric columns supporting a fluted frieze and pediment with decorated cornice. There is a 6 panelled door, the borders of the panels having fluted carving with patera to the corners. The architrave comprises 2 columns supporting an arch with traceried fanlight under. Either side of the doorway are 2 glazing bar sashes, with 5 similar sashes above and 5 smaller but similar sashes to the 2nd floor. Those of the 1st floor have stone balusters under, with a double band of ashlar running under the balu- sters and a single band over, these bands extend across the whole of the frontage. A single ashlar band runs under the ground floor windows. The top floor windows have ashlar sills. There is a single storey brick extension to the rear. Interior, has good original fireplaces, doors, architraves and coving. The contemporary staircase is lit by a large Venetian window.
