Area had Neolithic, Bronze, and Iron Age cultures; controlled by Rome late 1st century CE; invaded by Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, who formed kingdoms by the 5th century and from whose Germanic languages English was primarily derived; Vikings invaded in 1016 and the Normans in 1066.

Northern Ireland

Currently a consituent unit of the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland comprises the northeastern part of Ireland island, the core of the historic province of Ulster. It was ruled by the O'Neills of Tyrone in the 16th century. When the rest of Ireland demanded home rule in the late 19th century, the Protestant majority in Northern Ireland remained loyal to United Kingdom.


Area was inhabited by 3rd millenium BCE; Rome invaded, but never subdued native Picts; invaded by Scots from Ireland in the 6th century CE; Picts and Scots united in 844; invaded by Norsemen beginning in the 8th century; first linked with English monarchy in 12th century; 16th century marked by religious turmoil; Crowns of Scotland and England united in 1603, parliaments in 1707; significant percentage still read or speak Scottish Gaelic language.

East Timor

Comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, small surrounding islands, and area around Okussi on NW coast; was under Portuguese control in the 19th century and after WW II; was invaded and incorporated into Indonesia in 1975; gained independence on May 20, 2002, ending almost five centuries of foreign domination.


Originally inhabited by Celts; not subdued by Rome; was stronghold for Britons & Celts against invading Anglo-Saxons in 5th cen. CE; repulsed Danish invasions 9th cen.; saw conflict with England from 11th cen. until Edward I of England gained control.


Oregon is a state on the west coast of the United States. It became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859. Oregon's largest city is Portland and its capital is Salem.


Settled since 25,000 BCE; home to Hohokam by 300 BCE and Anasazi by 100 CE; nomadic Apache and Navajo arrived ca. 1300; Spanish came 16-17th centuries; area went to Mexico in 1821, to USA in 1850s after Mexican War; sided with Confederacy in 1861 in Civil War.
