Born into slavery on Cumberland Island, Primus Mitchell and his wife Amanda lived on Robert Stafford’s plantation. Freed by Union forces around 1862, they moved north on Cumberland Island and eventually purchased land in the Settlement where they built their own home. Primus became one of four founding trustees of the First African Baptist Church.
