Evening view of the Temple of Saturn at the west end of the Roman Forum, Rome, Italy. Originally built c. 497 BCE, it was restored in 43 BCE and rebuilt in 360-80 CE after a fire. The eight ancient columns are made of Egyptian granite; the inner frieze was carved of white marble c. 30 BCE; the Ionic capitals were made of marble in the 4th century CE. The inscription on the architrave, added at the restoration of 360-80, reads: SENATUS POPULUSQUE ROMANUS / INCENDIO CONSUMPTUM RESTITUIT... Holly Hayes all photos →

The focus of the ancient Saturnalia festival, the Temple of Saturn in the Roman Forum was erected in 497 BCE and rebuilt in 380 CE.
