A lovely day in Oxford

Posted on October 27, 2005 by Holly Hayes
After two days of dark clouds, rain, and wind, today was unseasonably warm and absolutely gorgeous. Not a cloud in the sky, a light breeze, and well over 70 degrees! I wore short sleeves all day and wasn't even cold in the shade. Amazing. In addition to the beautiful weather, I woke up to happy news this morning - one of our boxes has arrived! Just before we left the States, we shipped three big boxes of computers, books, clothes and other various stuff to ourselves by ground, which takes 4-6 weeks...

Oxford Matriculation

Posted on October 15, 2005 by Holly Hayes
Today's been a fun and eventful day, including both the arrival of Brenda (my friend from work, for those who don't know her) and my matriculation ceremony! Brenda's trip went very smoothly and she arrived earlier than expected, but David still was there to meet her at the bus station in Oxford. Meanwhile, I was shopping downtown for the necessary white blouse for my "sub fusc" (meaning "under the black" - the required uniform under the cap and gown)...

TGIF

Sorry it's been awhile since our last post - things have been busy here since I last wrote. We've been enjoying spending some time with Brenda (right, being goofy), who's here through Monday, and I've had lots of school stuff going on. Tuesday night was dinner with Brenda and her English friend Lee at a local Italian restaurant. We enjoyed very tasty pizza and interesting conversation...

At the pub with religious historians

Posted on October 14, 2005 by Holly Hayes
This afternoon was my weekly seminar with the five other students in my Ecclesiastical History program. It was in Christ Church College - hurrah! It was great to waltz right through the non-visitors entrance, walk across the gorgeous courtyard with a fountain in the middle, and into a lecture room just next door to Christ Church Cathedral. This was the first of eight weekly seminars on Historiography that we'll have throughout the term, and these form the core of my course...

Wolfson Supper

Posted on October 14, 2005 by Holly Hayes
Just got back from the pub with my colleagues. How fun is that?? I'll have to do another post on that, but must go back a bit first. David, by the way, is on his way back from London right now. He had a fun day of wandering around in the hi-fi area of town. He just sent me a text message from the train! I've never gotten a text message before. I attempted to reply but couldn't find the space bar button - should be interesting...

An exciting evening at Marks & Spencer

Posted on October 12, 2005 by Holly Hayes
Tonight, Holly is attending the Wolfson College dinner for new graduate students. I eagerly await to hear how the event went as I suspect she will have a great time. As it is a very warm evening I decided to walk to the nearby community of Summertown and pick up a few treats in anticipation of a possible movie on the laptop later tonight. For those interested, the treats being beer and Cornish clotted cream ice cream (aka the best vanilla ice cream ever)...

Lecture #2

Posted on October 11, 2005 by Holly Hayes
I had my second lecture this morning at 10. It was another fun one, and this time it was absolutely packed. It was the same type of room I described yesterday (also in the Examinations Schools), but must have had almost 100 people in it. People were sitting on the floor in the back and up the middle aisle! I arrived about 5 minutes early and managed to snag a chair on the aisle, which was excellent...

The start of term!

Posted on October 10, 2005 by Holly Hayes
Sorry we haven't posted anything in a few days. Mostly it's because we didn't do anything terribly interesting over the weekend. For the most part we just did what has become our "usual" here. We walked around town, wandered around in a couple colleges, did some shopping, I did lots of reading, we watched a DVD on the laptop, etc. This week is much more newsworthy, though! Michaelmas Term 2005 officially began yesterday (yep, on a Sunday), and I went to my first lecture today...

My first day of school (sort of)

Posted on October 4, 2005 by Holly Hayes
Today I had my first official academic thingy. It was a meeting of all new religion graduate students at the Theology Faculty office, conveniently located just three doors down from the Eagle and Child pub. At 1:45pm I had a preliminary meeting with my fellow students (5 of them) and professors (4 of them) in the field of Church History. It was great, as I got loads of information on my program, especially on the first term...

A lovely day in Bath

Posted on October 2, 2005 by Holly Hayes
We spent today in Bath, and had a wonderful time. Beautiful town, gorgeous abbey, historic Roman baths, delicious afternoon tea, and acrobat-comedians with sparklers in their butts. Yeah, we didn't expect that last one, either. We chose to go to Bath after a failed attempt to find convenient public transportation to the Cotswalds or the Chilterns for a nice nature walk...
