SU04SE Airmen's Cross, at junction of A344 and A360 1382-/4/10005 II

Memorial. 1912. Granite. Relief-carved cross set into wheel-head with very short shaft and stepped plinth. Inscription reads: "TO THE MEMORY OF CAPTAIN LORAINE AND STAFF-SERGEANT WILSON WHO WHILST FLYING ON DUTY MET WITH A FATAL ACCIDENT NEAR THIS SPOT ON JULY 5TH 1912". Loraine and Wilson were based at Larkhill with the newly-formed Royal Flying Corps; a very rare and historically significant memorial to two pioneer aviators.
