Built over the site of a Roman temple, the plan of this 11th-century church echoes that of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Notable artworks inside include a unique carved wooden door and a wooden crucifix.
The first version of St. Maria im Kapitol is constructed in Cologne on the site of a temple dedicated to the Capitoline Triad. Sponsored by Plektrudis (d. 717), it no longer survives but seems to have been a long hall church with rectangular foundations,
